കനത്ത മഴയ്ക്ക് ശേഷം, ട്രാക്കുകള്‍ക്ക് സമീപമുള്ള ചരിവ് മണ്ണ് വഴുതിപ്പോയി.കനത്ത മഴ പെയ്തിരുന്നു. മഴയും അനുബന്ധ മണ്ണിടിച്ചിലുമാണ് കാരണമെന്ന് തള്ളിക്കളയാനാവില്ലന്ന് ബാഡന്‍~വുര്‍ട്ടംബര്‍ഗിന്റെ ആഭ്യന്തര മന്ത്രി തോമസ് സ്ട്രോബിള്‍ പ്രസ്താവിച്ചു. സംഭവത്തെ തുടര്‍ന്ന് പോലീസ്, അഗ്നിശമന സേന, രക്ഷാ സേവനങ്ങള്‍, ഫെഡറല്‍ ഏജന്‍സി ഫോര്‍ ടെക്നിക്കല്‍ റിലീഫ് എന്നിവയ്ക്ക് പുറമേ, ജര്‍മ്മന്‍ സായുധ സേനയിലെ സൈനികരെയും വിന്യസിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടന്ന് ഫെഡറല്‍ പോലീസ് വക്താവ് പറഞ്ഞു.

അപകടത്തില്‍പ്പെട്ട ട്രെയിനില്‍ ഏകദേശം 100 പേര്‍ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. സിഗ്മറിംഗനില്‍ നിന്ന് ഉള്‍മിലേക്ക് പോകുകയായിരുന്ന റീജിയണല്‍ എക്സ്പ്രസ് വൈകുന്നേരം വൈകുന്നേരം 6:10 ഓടെ ബെച്ചിംഗനിലെ റീഡ്ലിംഗന്‍ ജില്ലയ്ക്ക് സമീപം കുറഞ്ഞത് രണ്ട് ബോഗികളെങ്കിലും പാളം തെറ്റി. അപകടസ്ഥലം ഉള്‍മില്‍ നിന്ന് ഏകദേശം 45 കിലോമീറ്റര്‍ തെക്ക് പടിഞ്ഞാറായിട്ടാണ് സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്.
